The war on terror? a comparison

New Pairodimes has an interesting article in which he compares the 9/11 attacks to people killed in driving accidents, and the effect that the “war on terror” has had on people worldwide.

Some figures:

It also describes the effects of the war on terror:

  • The government reading everyones mail?
  • Getting out of your shoes when entering an airplanes
  • Torturing suspects of terrorism

He then moves on to the things that can be done to prevent deaths in traffic accidents.

But the big question still is: why is the war on terror indeed so important, and are people ignoring the fact that other causes kill many more each year.

Don’t get me wrong: it’s awfull that people got killed in the 9/11 attacks, and i remember not believing at first that it had happened. It is terrible, and it should be prevented from happening in anymore. However, the side effects of this “war” are even more mayor than people may effect.

You have no privacy. Everything done against privacy is now acceptable because of this “war”. And for what? To find terrorists? I remember the US administration saying it would get Osama bin Laden, but somehow he seems to stay ahead of the field. In 5,5 years, Iraq has fallen, thousands have been killed in the “war”, but the reason for it: to find Osama, that has still to be resolved…

So what is my point: focus on the things that you can change, focus on the things that may not get the media coverage, but will get less people killed every year. And most important: quit speaking big words if you can’t keep them…
