This article by Guardian Ulimited called Fascist America, in 10 easy steps shows us the lessons learnt by history how to create a fascist society. It also matches those steps to the things currently taking place in the US under the Bush Administration.
The 10 steps:
1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy - do i need to point to 9/11?
2. Create a gulag – Guantanomo bay?
3. Develop a thug caste
4. Set up an internal surveillance system – discussion on wiretaps? internet monitoring?
5. Harass citizens’ groups
6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
7. Target key individuals
8. Control the press
9. Dissent equals treason
10. Suspend the rule of law
The article gives a lot of examples how the Bush administration is supposed to be acting out these steps. I don’t have enough information about the US to completely conclude that this story is true. However, some of these steps are indeed even clearly for an outsider. The question of Guantanomo bay is off course something that a lot of people are wondering about. Amnesty has been calling for it’s closure for many years now. But this hasn’t happened. Why? Because of the terrorist danger from those people detained there? Why have there then still not been any trials… A lot of questions.. no answers.
